That's not to say there were never performance or compatibility problems running 68k applications on PPC, but they were rare and mostly affected very old stuff, which often had problems even on an '040 or on System 7. Also all 601s had an FPU, while many '040s didn't. It's not that the emulator itself was magically efficient compared with Rosetta (indeed there were third party alternatives that had better performance), but there was a huge jump in speed going from the fastest '040 at 40Mhz to the slowest 601 at 60Mhz.

Except it was so fast and compatible that Apple never bothered to fully port Mac OS to PPC. In that case 68k code was subject to binary translation to PPC code, much like Rosetta on Intel Macs.

Prince of Persia though is old enough that it probably never got a PPC update (I didn't check).

Basilisk II- The best free GNU Mac emulator, emulating the Mac IIcx through. Well much like we had Universal binaries which were OS X applications containing both PPC and x86 code, on classic Mac OS we had Fat binaries which were the same thing except 68k and PPC (usually marketed as 'accelerated for Power Macintosh', white text in a red starburst oval). Mini vMac- Mini vMac is an open source emulator of 68000 based Macintosh computers. How does it work on both Motorola and PowerPC? The FPU and ASC are still not implemented, which sharply limits what programs will work without crashing (which I may not have made clear enough before). (In fact, you may not see color until selecting it from the 'Monitors' control panel.) However, regardless of the chosen color depth, Black and White is also available, and can be selected from the 'Monitors' control panel. Color depth is a compile time option, instead of run time option, to help keep Mini vMac simple and small. These options only work with the Macintosh II emulation ('-m II').

'-depth 0' is black and white (the default for now), '-depth 1' is 2 bit color (4 colors), '-depth 2' is 4 bit color (16 colors), '-depth 3' is 8 bit color (256 colors), '-depth 4' is 16 bit color (thousands), and '-depth 5' is 32 bit color (millions). The desired color depth is chosen at compile time, with the '-depth' option in the build system. So far this only works in OS X, with other platforms to be implemented later. Today's Development source snapshot adds color to the Mac II emulation.
